Wilhelm von Plueschow Vintage Male Nudes Mix Classic Set B
Many of you will no doubt be quite familiar with the work of Wilhelm von Gloeden, however it was only quite recently that I became more aware of his cousin, my mind was blown!
I DO NOT AGREE: 'but it generally is considered somewhat inferior to Gloeden's'
If anything I consider the work of Wilhelm to be more 'erotic.'
So far I have collected over 1,200 images by Wilhelm and can with some confidence disclose that this no doubt is the largest collection available via the web.
It has been a labour of love to create the collection.
At least 2/3 of the images have been edited to improve exposure, contrast with much cropping.
Also to get the collection into sequenced sets has been a monumental task.
von Plüschow (1852-1930) An illustrious photographer who is spoken about less Gloeden but whose work commenced earlier than his, Wilhelm von Plüschow initiated the Baron into photography and influenced him in his career in the profession.
Born in Wismar in Nord Germany, on 18th August 1852, Plüschow arrived in Italy around 1870 and was registered there as a Whine Merchant.
He started his career as a photographer around 1875 in Naples, later moving to Rome.
Plüschow met youths in Naples and Rome and invited them to his studio.
These young Italians had no problem shedding their clothes, being proud bodies and pleases to show them off.
His photographs are often composed, sophisticated, but seem more direct than those of his cousin Gloeden, in looks, lasciviousness and sometimes in provocation.
He liked to photograph young men in archeological settings like Pompeii, or the Temple of Dionysus en Athens, showing the Greek Ideal. Around 1897 he left for Egypt and brought back fine works for the tourist (like those of the Pyramids) but also nudes of boys – and of girls. Such prints are rarer than those of his period.
Many of his works were reproduced over several years in the German magazine “Die Shönheit” in the early 1900s.
He oeuvre includes many nudes and some fine portraits.
After 1910, Plüschow returned to Germany. He passed away in Berlin on 3rd January 1930.
