Early childhood memories are filled with so much talk of the war. The War, all other wars had a name, Civil, Independence, WW1, Korea but not WW2, it was "The War". That is all that needed to be said and everyone knew what war was being talked about. Old black and white photos of my dad with groups of his friends fill his old logbook from his very early navy days. When looking at those photos of 3, 4, 8 or so guys in a group I wonder how many of them never saw the end of the war because they made the ultimate sacrifice. A sacrifice that allows us to live the free life we are able to live today. I think many people feel that there is a lack of appreciation and understanding of how that sacrifice has benefited us all including our children and grandchildren, who seem to be less appreciative and don't understand how much of the goodness they feel in their lives today is because of those very guys in the old photos who never made it to the end to see victory.
You're right, 80 years ago and the 11 months that followed and culminated in V E Day doesn't seem all that long ago and do we owe, brother, do we ever owe.

Donald tRump once called all the dead American soldiers buried in Normandy from that day "suckers and losers". Remember that come election day.
Those who don't give a shit, don't give a shit. Unfortunately, they're going to vote.
